Springs for Horse Drawn Vehicles, previously out of print, is a compilation of articles on spring making from the late 19th century trade journals of the carriage industry compiled by Don Peloubet, wheelwright, and Susan Green, librarian and carriage historian. Most of the articles are from the two leading journals of the period, The Hub, and The Carriage Monthly, collections of which are housed at the Carriage Association of America.
Howard du Bois was a contributing editor of The Hub, and wrote many articles on wheel making and axle making. John Mosier was foreman of the smith shop at the factory of the United States' premier carriage builder, Brewster and Company, in New York City, and wrote many articles on axle and spring setting. These journals were aimed toward those involved in the manufacture of pleasure carriages, business vehicles and sleighs. This encouraged an active interchange of ideas, in the belief that this would lead to as perfect a vehicle as could be made.
The information in this book should be of value to those interested in spring making at the high point of the carriage industry, as well as those studying the history of the period. The engineering of early cars and automobiles owes a debt to the legacy of these spring makers and engineers who forged new paths in design and invention in their pursuit of perfection.
