Because of their athletic ability, Standardbreds can excel at competitive driving, roadster classes and combined driving and for recreational use. They are driven single or in teams, in carts, wagons and slights.  The retraining process is to replace the race routine with a pleasure owner routine and familiarize the horse with some different equipment.  Old racetrack habits can surface, remember the horse is not trying to be bad, he is just doing what he was encouraged to do in a cart in his previous life.
