It seems that in its heyday there was no end to the rich variety of horse-drawn vehicles, in the service both of the amateur and the professional coachman, in private, in commercial, and even in government ownership. The really surprising thing is that specimens of so many of these types have survived in good condition to this day, and are to be seen in respectable numbers, still working on the road, at Meets of the British Driving Society.

Mrs. Marylian Watney was a keen amateur whip and an accurate observer of the niceties of the wheelwright's and coach builder's art.  The diversity of these types is not due to fussiness or fashion: there were sensible reasons why a new style of vehicle was produced to meet a particular need.  Mrs Watney guides us through the peculiar beauties and virtues of each in turn, with the aid of lavish and elegant illustrations.
