Carriage Terminology: an Historical Dictionary, by Don Berkebile, is one of the most comprehensive dictionaries of carriage terms and carriage types. Berkebile was the long time Curator of Transportation for the Smithsonian Institution, and Carriage Terminology represents decades of efforts in refining and defining the use of carriage terms in its near 500 pages.
"In compiling this dictionary, the aim has been to gather together all of the known carriage types of the Western World as well as many of the better known vehicles of other areas, and to give the derivation of the terms, if known, and the history and characteristics of the vehicles to which the terms are applied."
Carriage Terminology lays out carriage types from Adopticon (a six-horse advertising wagon) to Yellowstone Wagon, and everything in between, as well as features a second section on Carriage Nomenclature including parts, pieces, colors, and all manner of associated unique terms related to carriages.
Most vehicle types are represented by illustrations to aid the reader in deciphering the myriad of styles, types, and designs of carriages and their terms.
This is a primary reference for any carriage library.
